The professional workforce looks quite different than it did at the start of 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced brick-and-mortar businesses to move their operations online, rendering some jobs obsolete or in serious need of a overhaul. In fact, 77% of workers are ready to learn new skills or retrain completely, according to PwC’s 2021 Hopes and Fears Report on Upskilling.

As the pandemic has changed the way we work, companies have found new ways to do business. “We can attribute much of the country’s economic resilience over the past two years to the hard work and adaptability of American businesses — and the digital tools that have helped them,” Lisa Gevelber, founder of Growing Up with GoogleDit Fortune. “We want to continue this momentum. »

Helping businesses of all sizes retrain and upskill their current employees, Google announced on May 2 that all U.S. businesses are eligible to receive up to 500 free scholarships for Google Career Certificates, worth $100,000 per company.

“It’s no secret that companies of all sizes struggle to hire and retain talent with key skills,” says Gevelber.. “Google is excited about how this offering will particularly help small businesses that may not have skills development programs for their employees and are keen to find talent with digital skills. »

Training adds to Google’s certificate program

This new training program is in addition to that of Google. $100 million fund that gives access to Google Career Certificates to 20,000 people, a move CEO Sundar Pichai and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo announced in February. This program also provides professional coaching, interview preparation and placement services, and living allowances.

Certificates available under the new Grow with Google program include IT support, data analytics, and project management. Google also this week announced the launch of its Digital Marketing and E-Commerce Certificate, which will train workers to find customers online, sell products or services, and perform marketing analytics and measurement.

“The world is rapidly becoming an increasingly visual place, and digital and visual communication will be key skills for just about any career,” Amy Schultz, Canva’s Global Head of Talent Acquisition, said in a press release announcing the program. “We look forward to working with Google to empower people in a skills-driven job market. »

How to apply for the program and what it looks like

About 75% of small and medium-sized businesses said they had adopted digital tools during the pandemic, according to Gevelber, but the new Grow with Google program is available to U.S. businesses of any size. “Digital skills can help these businesses continue to grow online, reach new customers and unlock new revenue streams while providing more opportunities for their workers. »

Any US-based company can apply for the program, and all eligible companies can receive up to 500 free scholarships, which is worth $100,000, according to Google. This values each certificate at around $200. Certificates are offered through Coursera, an online education provider, and take approximately three to six months to complete. Students are not required to have a degree or experience in the field they are studying, according to Google.

The app asks basic questions about the company, including number of employees, industry, and contact information. Instead, Gevelber calls it a “simple verification process.”
