the war has already begun between Apple and Meta

In November, Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman predicted a war between Apple and Meta (Facebook). Indeed, while relations between the two groups are already strained (due to restrictions on advertising targeting, and the commission charged by the App Store), they will soon be direct competitors.

After acquiring Oculus, Meta has become one of the leaders in the field of AR/VR. These technologies are important for Mark Zuckerberg, because he is convinced that during this decade, smartphones will be replaced by augmented reality glasses.

“While I expect phones to remain our primary devices for most of this decade, at some point in the 2020s we will have game-changing augmented reality glasses that will redefine our relationship with technology”wrote the boss of Meta in January 2020.

Apple would have recruited the communication manager of Meta’s AR / VR projects. The start of hostilities?

For its part, Apple also plans to launch AR / VR products. And when this product is on the market, the two companies will be in direct competition.

And in order to ensure communication around its future AR / VR products, Apple would have recently recruited the communication manager of Meta. In any case, this is indicated by a new newsletter from Mark Gurman, relayed by our colleagues from 9to5Mac.

Andrea Schubert, who handled communications and public relations for the AR/VR branch of Meta, is said to have left the group to join Apple, where she will assume a similar role.

This rumor sheds light on the future rivalry between Apple and Meta in the fields of virtual reality and augmented reality. She also suggests that if Apple needs a communications manager, it’s because its first product launch is imminent.

The Cupertino company has never officially declared that it is developing augmented reality or virtual reality helmets or glasses. Nevertheless, in recent years, patent applications filed by Apple, as well as its acquisitions, have given us an overview of the technologies developed. And moreover, Tim Cook has never hidden his interest in AR / VR.

The first Apple headphones in 2022?

Today, everything suggests that Apple’s first AR / VR product will be released in 2022. First, the firm would launch a headset that should combine virtual reality and augmented reality. Nevertheless, the objective of this one would be to launch, later, augmented reality glasses.

And like Meta, Apple anticipates a replacement of smartphones by AR glasses within a few years. According to a rumor, the firm would think of replacing the iPhone by this new category of products in ten years.

Finally, it is also worth noting that Google could also step up a gear. In recent years, the Mountain View firm has abandoned its Google Glass glasses. But recently, his new projects have been highlighted by several job postings.

“Our team builds the software components that control and manage the hardware of our augmented reality (AR) products. These are the software components that run on AR devices and are closest to the hardware. As Google adds products to the AR portfolio, the OS Foundations team is the very first software team to work with new hardware”we read in one of these job offers.
